Chain link fence installation Peterborough ON

Picture
Chain link fences are familiar with the wires intertwined into diamond shapes, found often in schools, institutions, businesses, and with recent features to make it more attractive, not uncommonly used in homes as well.

The chain link fabric, or mesh, is made from a steel wire that comes in different gauges or diameters, the most common ones ranging from 6 to 11.5.  The higher the gauge number, the thinner the wire. You’ll likely find the higher gauges in temporary fencing situations, the lowest gauges in high security industrial areas, and gauge 9 in the most common residential and commercial settings.

Chain link materials can be galvanized coated or vinyl coated.  Galvanization is a zinc coating that helps with preventing corrosion and rust, and offers great value fencing for the most affordable and purely functional use.  The galvanized chain can be colour coated with a vinyl coat that offers additional protection while adding some flexibility in style and colour. Colours available are usually brown, black, white or green.  To enhance your chain link fence appearance and functionality, you can add optional accessories such as post caps, finials, privacy slats and balls.

Now, let’s explore the pros and cons of chain link fencing:

Pros:

  • Probably the most affordable option out of all fencing material options.
  • Very durable especially with the mid to lower gauge wire and galvanized coating along with the optional vinyl coating.
  • Galvanization makes chain link fences resistant to corrosion and rust.
  • Very versatile in different settings, from industrial to commercial to home.

Cons:

  • Despite the availability of decorative accessories, your chain link fencing probably won’t be featured in any home and garden magazine anytime soon.  Despite its durability and practicality, it’s still commonly considered by many as the least attractive option out of all fencing materials.
  • Unless you add additional privacy slats, it doesn’t provide much in terms of privacy.  This may not be an issue when used in settings like daycares and schools where lack of privacy isn’t an issue and visibility through the fence may be considered a good thing.  But in residential settings where privacy is valued, you may need to add additional privacy slats.

If you’re thinking of installing a fence in your home’s yard, a lot of materials offer great durability and longevity.  Although chain-link fencing is the most affordable option, remember that you won’t be replacing a fence for many years, and so the cost savings will be mitigated over the years potentially.  You’ll likely be dealing with minor fence repairs in between replacements.
Be sure to check out other fencing materials such as metal, vinyl and wood and learn about each one’s pros and cons to determine what the best one would be for your situation.  Of course, you can always contact us and get our honest opinion about which features would work best for your home or business.
